The Balearic archipelago overtakes the Canary Islands as the preferred tourist destination among Generation Z
A study by the airline Vueling has highlighted preferences in tourist destinations among different generations. The report covers both national and international destinations and, of course, the Canary Islands appear on several occasions.
The study indicates that the Canary archipelago is not as attractive as the Balearic Islands for Generation Z, or in other words, those born between 1995 and 2000. Mallorca, Menorca and especially Ibiza are the main tourist attraction for this group , who come on holiday mainly in search of beaches and parties, which is a great advantage for the Balearic archipelago due to the high season in Ibiza, a world reference in the field of nightlife.
However, it's not all bad news for the Canary Islands. The loss the islands are experiencing with Generation Z is offset by the influx of older tourists, specifically Generation X (born between 1965 and 1981) and Baby Boomers (born between 1946 and 1964). This is positive news considering that this group brings "higher-quality tourism," meaning they come to the islands seeking relaxation and spend significant amounts of money on accommodation, preferring resorts with amenities like spas and other wellness services, as well as on restaurants.
A great example of this is the Nordic and German market that usually comes to the islands, which is mostly made up of families and elderly couples who even spend long periods in the archipelago taking advantage of the good Canarian climate and the freedom that their retirement offers them. Some of them even own properties in tourist areas of the archipelago such as Meloneras, Playa del Inglés or Adeje, among many others.
Spending trends at destinations that, on many occasions, contrast with those of younger people, who choose to go “just right” and often even take trips of a day or two, spending the night at airports to save money. from the accommodation and leave your money directly in the shops and establishments in the area.
