The recount of the CERA vote in Madrid brings joy to Clavijo and company

CRISTIAN SANCHEZ Tuesday, August 01, 2023

The count carried out these days in the Provincial Board of Madrid has raised a political scenario that the archipelago is already studying how to take advantage of.

As if it were a lottery, the counting of the CERA vote  in Madrid has spread smiles and joy at the Canary Coalition headquarters. And no, it is not because they have scratched another deputy after the recount in one of the Provincial Boards of the archipelago, the reason is almost better for the interests of the nationalists: Canarian Coalition is seen as a key piece to form a government after the recount of the CERA vote in the capital.

In a political scenario as tight as the one left on the night of June 23, each seat is worth gold. That is why after the seat that the PP took from the PSOE in Madrid after the CERA vote was counted, that scenario has changed and a new political actor has entered the scene; In this case, that actor is Canarian Coalition.

The nationalists, who initially showed their willingness to negotiate with Feijóo despite how unlikely his investiture seems, are now positioning themselves as a key piece within a possible left-wing pact after the loss of the seat by the socialists after the recount. of the vote of the Census of Absent Resident Foreigners.

Canarian Coalition issued a firm and blunt speech after obtaining a deputy: it would not support a government that included VOX or Sumar. A demand that only sought to sell its support at a high price in order to form a government, since both forces (with 33 and 31 seats respectively) are essential, both in a right-wing and left-wing bloc.

However, that red line that the nationalists marked seems to have begun to blur after seeing a gap in a more than possible government of Pedro Sánchez. This is what Cristina Valido, elected representative of the Canarian Coalition, has shown, who in recent days has softened the party's speech, ensuring that they are closer to Sumar than to VOX, since they have supported proposals promoted by Yolanda Díaz in Congress. , unlike with Santiago Abascal.

With these statements, the nationalists throw down a gauntlet that they hope Sánchez will pick up when he returns from vacation in La Mareta, something that seems to interest the acting President, since with the Canary Coalition's yes he would only need an abstention on the part of Junts, the formation of Puigdemont that has already made clear its demands to support Sánchez: the holding of a referendum in Catalonia and amnesty.

For its part, the demands that can be intuited from the Canary Coalition seem simpler: the Executive's commitment to the jurisdiction and the Economic and Fiscal Regime of the islands and compliance with the Canarian Agenda established by the Government of the Canary Islands.

For now, Cristina Valido has already confirmed that she has had “specific meetings” with the two most voted forces and has positioned the island formation as a force that moves “in centrality and balance.”
