American tourism continues to grow

CRISTIAN SANCHEZ Wednesday, August 02, 2023

From Madrid they have been quite surprised with the increase in American tourists that Spain has experienced recently.

In Madrid they have had a pleasant surprise; The increase in tourism from the United States exceeded half a million entries in June, registering 41,7% more than the same period in 2022 and also registering a notable increase in average spending per traveler, which stands at 16,3, XNUMX% on pre-pandemic figures.

The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism has indicated that the average expenditure per traveler stands at 1.275 euros, 6% more than in 2022 and 16,3% higher than the best data prior to 2020, the year of the beginning of the pandemic.

With an increase in spending of almost 20%, the Canarian Minister Héctor Gómez has considered that the growth of this tourism market represents a revaluation of Spanish destinations and the confirmation that Spain is a country with high quality offers.

At Maspalomas24h, we already analyzed a few months ago how the American tourist could replace the Russian one due to the conflict that is still ongoing in Ukrainian territory and, why not, other tourist markets whose tourist output has not recovered its pre-pandemic level or that are simply not able to match the figures that the American market could leave in national territory.

Of course, the Canary Islands have a fundamental role in this equation. At the beginning of the year, the archipelago recorded a growth of more than 70% in the arrival of North American tourists. One reason why it was decided to establish a direct route between Tenerife and New York with a frequency of three flights per week, an unusual fact in the archipelago for a transatlantic flight.

Turismo de Canarias has also been quite active in selling the benefits of the archipelago to the North American market. In April of this same year, representatives of the islands attended tourism promotion days organized by Turespaña in Mallorca, where they met with a multitude of North American travel agents.

This great surprise that Madrid attributes almost exclusively to the central Executive for its commitment to the quality and excellence of national tourist destinations, also responds to years of hard work by the island institutions of the sector.
