Health activates health risk warnings due to high temperatures on several islands:

 

Activation of red, orange and yellow warnings in different municipalities on the islands of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Tenerife and La Palma due to the forecast of high temperatures from August 9 and, at least, until August 13, depending on the evolution of the forecasts in the coming days.

 

To assign risk levels, an algorithm has been established that includes expected maximum temperatures, pre-established threshold temperatures and risk factors.

 

GRAN CANARIA : From August 9th to at least August 13th, 2023

 

  • Red notice: Agüimes, Artenara, Ingenio Mogán, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Aldea de San Nicolás, Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Santa Brígida, Tejeda, Valsequillo and Vega de San Mateo.
  • Orange notice: Telde and Valleseco (August 11 to 13).
  • Yellow Notice: Teror (August 11).

A Heat Wave affecting the entire Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands.

 

An African air mass will begin to affect the archipelago starting today, Wednesday, August 9, persisting for several days. As a consequence there will be a significant rise in temperatures with values ​​that will reach 40º or more. Friday the 11th and Saturday the 12th will most likely be the hottest days of the episode

 

 

August 11, 2023: Maximum temperature: 40°C. Primarily affecting mountain peaks and mid-altitude areas, and likely to extend to coastal zones. Minimum temperatures will also be high.

On Thursday, August 10, in low areas in the north of the islands of greater relief, cloudy intervals at dawn and at the end of the day, with clear skies in central hours. In the rest of the areas, slightly cloudy or clear skies. 

 

Calima at altitude mainly affecting the eastern and southern slopes of the midlands and summits. Generally rising temperatures, which at maximum temperatures in inland areas of Fuerteventura, as well as in the midlands and summits of the mountainous islands, could become notable, with values ​​above 34 to 36 ºC. 

 

In the midlands and summits of the islands with greater relief, the minimum temperatures could also rise significantly. On the coasts moderate wind from the northeast, more intense in the usual areas of acceleration of the trade wind where very strong gusts could probably occur. In the midlands of the mountainous islands and inland areas of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura it will tend towards the east or strong northeast. At summits, this component is moderate.
