The championship, which takes place between August 24 and 26, celebrates its 34th edition and is the main sport fishing contest in the Canary Islands.
The Minister of Tourism, Carlos Álamo, presented the event poster as a “highly valuable” tool to export the tourist brand of Gran Canaria among clients with interest in fishing and the marine environment.
After more than three decades, the dispute of 34 editions and the participation of more than 40 boats, the main sport fishing competition in Gran Canaria, the Open International Deep Sea Fishing Gran Canaria, returns with its third edition consolidated as a reference competition for the peninsular and European customer and that, with the support of Turismo de Gran Canaria and Gran Canaria Blue.
The Minister of Tourism of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Carlos Álamo, presented this Thursday in Pasito Blanco, together with the Councilor for Sports of San Bartolomé, Ramón Suárez; the president of the Pasito Blanco Yacht Club, Santiago de Armas; the director of the Pasito Blanco Marina, Francisco Torres; and Manuel Ramírez, member of the organizing committee, the poster of a sports proposal that will be held in the south of the Island between August 24 and 26. A poster that has been designed, on this occasion, by the American journalist and influencer, a reference in the world of Deep Sea Fishing, Carey Chen.
This new edition of the main sport fishing competition in the Canary Islands is committed, once again, to a winning formula, which combines attributes such as a privileged climate with a temperature of around 28 degrees, a gentle trade wind and the waves for all audiences of the Mar de las Calmas. In addition, we must add a sandy coastline with a top-quality tourist infrastructure and some of the seabeds with the greatest natural wealth in Europe. These are some of the benefits presented by the III Gran Canaria Deep Sea Fishing International Open, organized by the Pasito Blanco Yacht Club, together with ports such as Mogán and Puerto Rico, with the participation of an international fleet made up of some forty boats. Furthermore, as it could not be otherwise, the tradition and values of a proposal with more than three decades of history and that was a pioneer and spearhead of the catch and release philosophy that is imposed today in the defense of the principles of responsible and sustainable fishing.

Carlos Álamo also highlighted that “we hope to have good fishing days and thus be able to have many images that allow us to sell our tourist destination in Europe and also in America, where we are making an effort to attract new niches of tourists. We know that Deep Sea Fishing is very important for Americans and let's see if we are able to be more attractive to Americans with this tournament and become a benchmark event."
The Councilor for Sports of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Ramón Suárez, thanked Gran Canaria Tourism and the Pasito Blanco Yacht Club for holding this International Open and indicated “that from the City Council we support all these international events that contribute to the expansion of the tourist destination of our municipality. In addition, we support the participation of young people in the fishing contest for the youngest members of the family and we encourage them to participate.”
For their part, from the Pasito Blanco Yacht Club, they indicated that “we have 34 editions of experience organizing events of this type and we are very proud to continue working in this line, with the support of Gran Canaria Tourism. This year, more than ever, specialized magazines from Germany and England have covered the event, and also in the United States, so we can say that the Gran Canaria International Deep Sea Fishing Open is one hundred percent international, because it has crossed the borders," said Francisco Torres, director of the Pasito Blanco Marina, before advancing that "today everything indicates that it will be a success, we have the presence of charter boats with foreign tourists and tourists from other islands, which “which means a great incentive for tourism in Gran Canaria.”
Francisco Torres also highlighted the presence of the international journalist-artist Carey Chen. “An internationally recognized artist, who makes paintings and works of art about Sport Fishing, like the one he has done for the poster of this III Gran Canaria Deep Sea Fishing International Open.”

The fishing will be high and so will the prizes, with an Open that will have a star prize of 20.000 euros for the first participant to catch and release three blue marlin specimens.
