The red warning is extended due to high temperatures in Las Tirajanas

CRISTIAN SANCHEZ Friday, 11 of August of 2023

The intrusion of African air over the archipelago will not only give rise to a heat wave starting today, but also to an episode of intense haze

By decision of Health, San Bartolomé and Santa Lucía de Tirajana maintain the red notice due to high temperatures, at least until August 16

August 12 and 13:

The wind from the North or Northeast of 50 to 61 km/h (force 7) on the west and southeast coasts. Suspended dust with visibility: 3000 m. Mainly affecting peaks and midlands, and locally in coastal areas.

Maximum temperature: 42 ºC. Mainly affecting medium areas, it is likely to extend to coastal areas. Minimum temperatures will remain above 30 ºC.

On Monday 14 August: Maximum temperature: 38 ºC. Affecting medians.

Extreme Risk:

Maximum temperature: 42 ºC. In Gran Canaria, temperatures may exceed 43º C. Minimum temperatures will remain above 30º C, especially affecting the midlands and west, south and east slopes.

The extreme heat experienced these days in the south and southeast of Gran Canaria forces us to extend the notice issued by the Ministry of Health a few days ago. The extension of this alert accompanies the risk of forest fires, which has forced the postponement of the traditional San Lorenzo fire festival in the island's capital.

This extension until Wednesday of next week also affects Agüimes, Ingenio and Mogán, as well as 5 other municipalities, with the exception of Santa Brígida, where the extension of the notice lasts one day less, until August 15.

In the midlands it is expected that temperatures will even exceed 40 degrees at specific times. Furthermore, the presence of haze makes these days of extreme heat even more difficult in the south and southeast of Gran Canaria, which is why Health has insisted on remembering the recommendations to avoid health complications for the vulnerable population (with pathologies, over 65 years old or pregnant, among others).

Some of these recommendations are: stay in cool places as much as possible, stay hydrated, avoid direct exposure to the sun or wear loose clothing made of materials such as linen or cotton.
