New information panels in the Charca de Maspalomas

The City Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, the Maspalomas Consortium and Cabildo collaborate to install five information panels

The signage offers updated information on biodiversity and serves to raise visitor awareness about the ecosystems and regulations of the space.

 

The natural environment of the Charca de Maspalomas, included within the Special Natural Reserve, has been for years a meeting and stopping place for migratory birds that discover in this place the ideal place to feed, rest and, on some occasions, nest. The City Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, the Maspalomas Costa Canaria Consortium and the Environment Department of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, aware of the importance of this protected area, have updated and inaugurated today, Friday, August 11, the information panels that preside over it. important bird watching point. As of today, the panels have updated information, in several languages, on its biodiversity, serving as a public resource to raise awareness and sensitize visitors about the ecosystems, animal and plant species in the area and their care. 

 

As described by the director and conservator of the Special Natural Reserve of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Marta Martínez, “it was necessary to highlight this strategic enclave of native and migratory birds.” The renewal of the panels was necessary because the previous ones reflected birds that have not been observed for years and, on the other hand, given that we are currently receiving new species and birds that find in the Charca de Maspalomas “a permanent place to nest, shelter and feed; "It was necessary to update this information in order to identify the current species." As an example, she highlighted, we have had the presence of dyke egrets for a few months now, "they are feeding in the garden areas of the municipality, which indicates that they are comfortable and that they are finding their home among us." 

 

In total, five panels have been installed that reflect the birds that nest in the area, those that are in danger, their flora and fauna, the problems and threats they face, as well as the importance as a priority habitat, protection of the wetland and conservation actions.  

 

The second deputy mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Elena Álamo, also participated in the presentation of the panels, highlighting that the objective is for tourists and visitors, “increasingly more active and specialists in following and visiting natural spaces.” know that here they have a rich biodiversity, “in an idyllic environment where birds from all over the world make a stop to continue their migratory route to the African and American continents.” For her part, the Councilor for Tourism, Yilenia Vega, highlighted the importance of the Maspalomas Charca as a strategic point for bird watching, this “in addition to being one of the most photographed places in our tourist destination, it serves to support diversification.” , placing Maspalomas Costa Canaria as a destination for lovers of ornithology.”
