The 16th edition will be open until August 20 from 17:00 p.m. to 23:00 p.m. in the gardens surrounding the Lighthouse
In addition to direct sales, this edition once again has a space for an artisan to perform a live demonstration of the techniques of his trade every day.
The 16th Faro de Maspalomas Crafts Fair will once again present a sample of the creations of the main artisan trades currently carried out in the Canary Islands, manifested through the different sectors exhibited: ceramics, jewelry, wood, metal, leather, textile or glass , an example of the combination between tradition and design, which allows us to appreciate the sensitivity and exclusivity that artisanal production gives to its production.
From today until August 20, the fair organized by the Fund for Ethnography and the Development of Canarian Crafts (FEDAC) will bring together 64 artisans from 17:00 p.m. to 23:00 p.m., who practice 23 of the 87 trades artisans that make up the official catalog. There will also be representation from 15 of the 21 municipalities of Gran Canaria, with the capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, being the one with the largest number of representatives with 20.
The Minister of Economic Development, Industry, Commerce and Crafts of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Minerva Alonso, assured that “the sector has been especially affected by the turbulent situation of the economy and that is why the support of the FEDAC is so important.” He also considered that "the Maspalomas Lighthouse Fair is a unique opportunity to learn about the extraordinary work of our great artisans and acquire some of these pieces, and in this way they can keep their workshops open and the survival of this part of our rich culture." ”.
During the course of the fair, there will be a stand dedicated to the traditional crafts of the Canary Islands, where every day an artisan will give a live demonstration of them. The opening day will be dedicated to weaving, Saturday to weaving, and Sunday to wool spinning. The week will begin with a demonstration of palm basket weaving, to continue on Tuesday the 15th with traditional pottery, on Wednesday with cutlery, on Thursday again with traditional pottery and on Friday with embroidery. The last Saturday of the fair will be dedicated to shoemaking and leather goods and the demonstrations will close with cane basketry on Sunday the 20th.
The investment necessary to hold this Fair is made by the FEDAC and is around 100.000 euros, although for its celebration there is the collaboration of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, with all the logistical support that is required. In the 15th edition held last August, direct sales reached 116.682 euros.
