A group of Tenerife residents has started collecting signatures for the Tenerife fire to go to level 3 and for the State to take charge of its extinction. In less than 24 hours they accumulate more than a thousand signatures
A petition on networks demands that the Tenerife fire, one of the most devastating in the last 50 years, go to level 3 so that the State takes charge of a situation that has already claimed more than 12,000 hectares in ten municipalities of Tenerife since last August 15.
The initiative has been launched by the Citizens' Platform No to Oil Platforms in the Port of Granadilla, seeking a change to reverse the course of this emergency, which has been completely out of control for six days. Through a petition on the online activism portal Change.org , the group is urging the Canary Islands Government to raise the emergency level to Level 3, in order to mobilize additional resources to address the crisis.
The request, supported by thousands of signatories, seeks that the direction of the management of this emergency be assumed by the state government, allowing for a greater allocation of resources in view of the severity that the fire has reached. The petition bears the signature of Jacinto José Velasco Triviño, representing the citizen group.
Velasco Triviño points out in the petition that, despite the great efforts of the extinction teams, emergency managers and the affected community, the fire has reached dimensions comparable to other similar disasters on the Peninsula. However, he emphasizes that the small size of the island intensifies the risks and consequences. More than 2% of Tenerife's territory has already been devoured by flames, and the situation is becoming increasingly critical.
The group that promotes this petition, in addition to highlighting the magnitude of the fire, warns that the burned perimeter exceeds 70 kilometers and threatens material and human resources. This has forced the evacuation of more than 12.000 people in the affected municipalities, creating dangerous situations for both residents and emergency teams. Although the great work of the troops has prevented this fire from causing fatalities, after almost a week of fire the situation remains critical and uncertainty persists.
Emergency level 3 entails a transfer of management direction to the central government, which would allow the activation of additional resources to combat the catastrophe.
