Daesh warns that it 'sets its eyes' to attack tourism in the Canary Islands

Maspalomas24H Monday, August 21 of 2023

It is a publication supported by the Ministry of the Interior. The report is from the Foundation Center for the Memory of Victims of Terrorism, whose president is Pedro Sánchez. In this summer's annual report by Cuadernos del Centro Memorial de las Víctimas del Terrorismo launched by the aforementioned foundation, it is noted that Daesh and Al Qaeda have set their sights on the tourist areas of the Canary Islands. The text, to which Maspalomas24H has had access, points out that "the novelty" on this occasion "has been the appearance of particularized references to the Canary Islands in some propaganda messages that have circulated through Islamist channels." Literally: "This is the archipelago known today as the Canary Islands, which "It is occupied by Spain. These tourist islands are too famous to mention. We are fighting in the Sahel and our eyes are on the islands of Al Andalus and its land."

The publication of the Center Foundation for the Memory of Victims of Terrorism warns that in March 2022 a Daesh production company "launched as a novel element the reference to the Canary Islands as a territory that is part of Al Andalus and that they aspire to conquer." In a publication released at the end of that month, a map of the archipelago is included accompanied by a text in which it was stated that “this is the archipelago known today as the Canary Islands, which is occupied by Spain. These resort islands are too famous to mention. "We are fighting in the Sahel and our eyes are on the islands of Al Andalus and its land." Here you can read the full report.

Throughout 2022, references to the conquest of ancient Al Andalus have been repeated in videos, publications and other propaganda media such that these mentions have already become part of the routine of jihadist groups: ""Look at our vanguard, beloved Palestine, because the eyes of Muslims are directed towards you and our hearts await the liberation of Al Andalus and the return to the home of Islam again," said a Daesh publication.

La publication of the Foundation Center for the Memory of Victims of Terrorism adds that "although it is not presented as a direct threat, it is also disturbing that images of Spanish police forces, such as the Civil Guard, carrying out public interventions appear in propaganda, because they can put their agents in the crosshairs of extremists. "In the summer of 2022, jihadist publications with images of these security forces were detected."

This August the Civil Guard, in collaboration with the Moroccan DGST, carried out an operation that resulted in the arrest of two people in Benavente (Zamora) and Cullera (Valencia). The two arrested individuals, who worked in a coordinated manner in the online medium, are charged with an alleged crime of indoctrination and recruitment of young people, including minors. The investigation considers that the two detainees were part of the “largest jihadist structure known in Spain” in relation to the recruitment and indoctrination of young people and minors. Both detainees were sent to prison by order of the judge. On July 19, a joint anti-terrorist operation carried out by the Moroccan DGST and the Civil Guard took place that resulted in the arrest in Lleida and Nador (Morocco) of two people of Moroccan nationality in their thirties. The two detainees, who were in a romantic relationship, had contact with members of Daesh in Syria and were part of a human trafficking network and a network of document falsification for terrorist purposes. The detainee in Spain was sent to prison without bail after it was shown that a good part of his criminal activity consisted of sending money to Daesh.
