Lopesan probes the rural business in the north of Gran Canaria

Yurena Vega Monday, August 28 of 2023

Lopesan is in talks to take control of leisure establishments in the north of Gran Canaria, a source from the tourism sector confirmed to Maspalomas24H this Thursday. This news has not been confirmed by the company about a tourism project that already has a name: Tesoros de Arucas.

The north of the island of Gran Canaria needs a renovation of its tourist infrastructures, and among them there is, for example, a four-star hotel in Agaete for sale and assets such as an island parador in Firgas, the Mesón de la Montaña in Arucas, among other possible assets. The Firgas parador was doing well until it came under the supervision of environmental officials from the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, who bored Mario Reyes, a historic tourism businessman who invested in the business but who was prevented by the officials from even installing a telephone line or touching the walls to remove mould caused by humidity.

This is a way of meeting one of the demands of the Arucas City Council, which has not let the area go to waste after the ownership, Empresas Marquesa de Arucas, became involved with the tenant since 2011 due to investment needs. In 2020, Marquesa de Arucas was outlining an exploitation agreement but with the pandemic the plans were blocked since it needed 500.000 euros in cash for reforms. The 2020 Arucas General Development Plan already recognises the space as a leisure centre.

In Firgas there is a Parador with 80 beds, space for restaurants and a craft shop with a natural viewpoint of Las Palmas that has been closed for more than 10 years and is subject to vandalism.
Nueva Canarias claims that it needs one million euros for the renovation. It was owned by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria but is now on loan to the Firgas Town Hall. This establishment was renovated in 2005 by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria.

Lopesan wants to improve the island's offer as a whole, not just that of the south of Gran Canaria. An opportunity for improvement while at the same time closing the business circuit of tourists who buy packages from wholesale operators. To this end, this summer of 2023 it has made progress in talks to take control of leisure establishments in the north of Gran Canaria, as confirmed to Maspalomas24H this Thursday by a source from the tourism sector. The tourism project already has a name: Tesoros del Norte, although it was initially called Tesoros de Arucas.

The north of the island of Gran Canaria requires a renovation of its tourist infrastructure, and among them there is, for example, a four-star hotel in Agaete for sale and assets such as a parador with a viewing point in Firgas, the Mesón de la Montaña in Arucas and a high-end rural hotel establishment.
