In the 80s, in Maspalomas the first steps of a tourist destination that would end up becoming one of the economic engines of the Canary Islands alternated with a story worthy of a Hollywood thriller that would end with a tragic outcome for its protagonist.
Robbery, drugs, suspicious deaths, irregular inheritance collections... the south of Gran Canaria has as many benefits and attractions as dark stories that are still unknown today. One of those stories is that of a German businessman who back in 1983 ran a well-known restaurant named after an important city in Germany. We will recognize him by the acronym of his first and last name: MS
MS was the owner of a popular restaurant in Cita de Playa del Inglés, a business that with the rise of tourism in the area during the 80s was quite profitable for the German. One afternoon, the businessman received a call from his native country informing him of the payment of an inheritance, an opportunity that MS wanted to take advantage of to carry out a series of projects that he had in mind in Canada.
MS told his plans to his friends in the south of Gran Canaria, however, the message reached three men who were in the area earning a living taking photos with animals in the tourist area. One of those three men was wanted after deserting the army.
MS made his trip to Germany and returned with his part of the inheritance after settling some accounts with his brother. However, the three people who heard MS's conversation took note and followed the German's steps upon arriving in Gran Canaria.
One of the nights after MS's arrival in the Canary Islands, a robbery occurred in a nightclub in the south where the thieves took a hunting shotgun belonging to the owner of the establishment. The night after that robbery, the three individuals who had their eye on MS raided his apartment when he was away and hid to wait for his arrival.
Upon arriving at his apartment, MS was surprised by the three attackers and saw how one of them pointed the same hunting shotgun at him that had been stolen the night before. Between screams, the attackers ordered the German to raise his hands and give them everything of value and money that he had in his residence. However, the three robbers got a big surprise when the German stood up to them and managed to knock down one of them, causing such a scandal late at night that a multitude of neighbors came out of their bungalows to see what was happening, which caused the thieves fled, but not before beating MS and breaking his hunting shotgun in the head with a butt and a pistol shot in the leg.
Badly injured and still shaken by the scare, MS goes to an outpatient clinic to treat the wounds caused during the assault. Such is the coincidence that, according to one of the members of his close circle at that time, he happens to meet at the doctor with one of the assailants of his apartment, who also came to be treated for the blows that the German inflicted on him during his defense. , but MS did not recognize him as he was still somewhat stunned by the situation.
The German continued with his projects and decided to park his plans in Canada to focus on hospitality in the south of Gran Canaria and run a disco pub in Playa del Inglés. However, still injured by the assault on his apartment, MS had an accident with his sports car, while making arrangements to open his establishment, which ended up costing him his life. The German fell over the Mirador de La Degollada de las Yeguas, going up towards Tunte when he was going to look for some papers at the town hall for his new premises.
The German's death remains surrounded by doubts and hypotheses to this day. The “official” version states that due to the injuries to his legs, he could not react in time due to the high speed at which he was traveling, with his powerful Porsche. However, even today, his close circle seems quite reluctant to believe that version.

Especially taking into account a factor that had not been mentioned until now: the German's ex-wife.
The businessman's ex-wife, older than him and whom his close circle calls "a whim of MS's youth," made the German sign life insurance during their marriage and, after his death, was in charge of putting pressure on him to collect as much as possible. before the policy. A payment that she received in 20 days with the help of an intermediary and that facilitated the disdain that the German's family showed for the deceased's assets since they were informed of his death. “I called the family and all they wanted was to repatriate the body as soon as possible and never hear from anyone else on the island”sources close to the German say.
This story, known thanks to the testimony of a member of the MS circle four decades ago and told to Maspalomas24h, highlights “the dark side” of a time in which San Bartolomé de Tirajana was booming thanks to the opening that tourism offered to the Gran Canaria municipality. A time in which, in front of the gallery, everything was prosperity, but behind closed doors it holds stories like that of MS and its sad end.
