The XIV insular Potato Tasting of Gran Canaria was held on September 1 at the Cabildo Agricultural Farm
The results of the experimental trial of the cultivation of potato varieties will be transferred, one more year, to farmers
The tasting panel of the XIV Gran Canaria Island Potato Tasting, composed of 16 members, determined that 'Soraya' is the best potato in Gran Canaria in the 2023 harvest. The Cabildo Experimental Agricultural Farm hosted, on Friday, September 1 , the closed-door session in which the ten most productive potato varieties of the “2023 Potato Variety Yield Trial” were tested in different cooking processes. Along with the special mention for the Best Potato of Gran Canaria, the best varieties were determined in the categories of wrinkling, parboiling and frying, which went to Picasso, Soraya and Valor respectively.
With the annual potato tasting, the Department of Primary Sector, Food Sovereignty and Water Security of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, directed by Councilor Miguel Hidalgo, meets several objectives of its strategic plan for the primary sector: the valorization of the product and the contribution to the advancement of its quality. The technicians of the Primary Sector Department will transfer to farmers the results of the “Performance trial of potato varieties in conventional and organic systems 2023”, in which twenty-eight different varieties of potatoes were planted and analyzed: seventeen among the most profitable in 2022 or greater presence in the island market, along with twelve other new ones. Very valuable data for farmers is obtained from the analysis of different parameters: productivity, organoleptic aptitude and resistance to droughts, pests and diseases, etc.

Approximately 1.200 hectares of potatoes are grown in Gran Canaria, producing 22 million kilos for the local market. This productive quantity meets the parameters recommended by the FAO to achieve food sovereignty since between 40% and 42% of the potatoes we consume annually have come from this land.
