The Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands explores with the Spanish Dyslexia Federation (FEDIS) the development of actions that guarantee the rights of people with dyslexia, taking into account early diagnosis, adaptations during different educational stages, as well as the visibility and awareness of this disorder that affects approximately 15% of the population.
This action has taken shape in a meeting held between the regional councilor, Poli Suárez, and the secretary of the aforementioned federation in which the importance of consolidating collaboration between the two institutions to guarantee the rights of people with mobility difficulties was made clear. learning.
The Canary Islands have 32.218 students with Specific Educational Support Needs (NEAE), who are cared for by Therapeutic Pedagogy and Hearing and Language teachers, as well as by Educational Guidance professionals. Within the NEAE, the so-called Specific Learning Difficulties (SED) are included, which affect some 1.055 students in the Archipelago.
Included within neurodevelopmental disorders as a specific learning disorder, dyslexia involves difficulties in reading (fluency, speed, comprehension), with possible implications in reading or calculation that interfere with people's work or academic performance. .
Pathways to further support
Learning difficulties in the field of communication and language require certain supports in part or throughout the students' schooling. “Working together, the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports and the Spanish Dyslexia Federation will seek the most appropriate ways to promote the academic performance and success of these students, which will benefit them in the educational, personal and family spheres. and social”, points out the regional councilor, Poli Suárez.
Among the priorities set, early diagnosis and providing answers from the socio-educational field, objectives for which the collaboration of the educational community is essential when it comes to improving the quality of life of students with dyslexia and other learning difficulties.
