Like every year in September in the south of Gran Canaria the traditional Pino tides return, so called because of the proximity of the Pino festivals to one of the highest tides of the year. There are times when the Maspalomas Pond is invaded by these waters, generating a spectacle of nature. The Pino tides are a phenomenon of large waves produced by the swell, also known as overflow. They usually originate during the autumnal equinox, due to the situation of the moon, in this case the new moon, which causes the tide and the size of the waves to increase after the summer calm. The high tides and low tides that are produced by the influence of the sun and the moon and their position with respect to the earth produce wide-ranging tidal coefficients on these dates. The combined gravitational pull of our star and our satellite produce one of the most important tides of the year.
