Value to the aboriginal culture in the Santa Lucía de Tirajana cart

 

The cart that the Santa Lucía de Tirajana City Council took to Teror on the occasion of the Pilgrimage of El Pino offering this Thursday stood out for its originality and for highlighting the culture of the ancient Canarians. In addition to the products of the land, the cart carried an Aboriginal house designed by the artist Sergio Guerra and intended to highlight the cultural and historical heritage represented by La Fortaleza de Santa Lucía de Tirajana, one of the most important Aboriginal sites in Canary Islands. The mayor of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Francisco García, attends this Friday on behalf of the Municipal Corporation the celebration of the big day of the patron saint of Gran Canaria.

 

Both the residents of the municipality who went up to Teror and the pilgrims who were in the streets where the carts from the 21 municipalities and the Gran Canaria council passed highlighted the originality of the cart and the presence of two artisans who were on it. making pieces with the techniques of the ancient Canaries. Saray Alvarado, an artisan from Santa Lucía helmet, was making a piece of clay, she was accompanied by Raúl Martell, from the Yo silbo association, who also did artisan work, both were wearing aboriginal clothing.

 

The construction they were in is a circular stone house, with a roof made of branches. The City Council of Santa Lucía de Tirajana was one of the first, in the 70s of the last century, to carry the aboriginal theme in its cart. Every year a paper fan was distributed to the public explaining the reason for the cart, with historical and ethnographic data.

 

 

The cart also carried agricultural products from the municipality such as potatoes, tomatoes, onions, pumpkins, gofio from Perez Gil, salt from the salt flats of Tenefé, and López López artisan bread from Santa Lucía. 

 

The municipal cart left number 17, and will be accompanied by the folkloric group Roca Canaria and the Santa Lucía de Tirajana dance group. Along with the cart will be the representatives of the Municipal Corporation and the residents of the municipality who were able to get on the three buses provided by the City Council. Mayor Francisco García stated that “this year in our cart we bring an aboriginal house like the ones that were in the site of the Santa Lucía Fortress, one of the most important on the islands, because we want to value the important cultural and historical heritage. what is in our municipality.” The first mayor added that "today the capital of the islands is here in Teror, because representatives of the 21 municipalities of Gran Canaria and other municipalities of the archipelago have come."
