Goodbye to Pepe Domingo Castaño, a very Canarian Galician

The world of communication, sports and music is in mourning this Sunday for the death of Pepe Domingo Castaño. The legendary sports journalist died early in the morning at the Zarzuela Hospital in Madrid, suddenly and accompanied by his family.

 

The news sadly woke up millions of listeners who, just by listening to the mythical “Hello, Hello…” with which Tiempo de Juego began, already recognized one of the most important and influential figures on the Spanish radio scene. Manolo Lama and Juanma Castaño spoke about their companion and friend, very excited about him, remembering moments and stating that "every time you hear 'hello, hello' you will notice Pepe closer than ever." Sports clubs and recognized sports figures such as Rafa Nadal or Fernando Alonso have also expressed their regret.

 

 

Pepe Domingo Castaño was a man of passions, and one of those passions was Gran Canaria. In love with Maspalomas and very close to the current Sports Councilor, Ramón Suárez, Pepe Domingo enjoyed the hotels, gastronomy and landscapes of the south of Gran Canaria. On more than one occasion, Castaño served as tourism ambassador for San Bartolomé de Tirajana during the broadcast of Tiempo de Juego, stating that he does not understand how “there are people who go to the Caribbean with the Canary Islands an hour and a half away by plane.”

 

 

The departure of Pepe Domingo Castaño at the age of 80 coincides with a football Sunday, leaving a huge gap between family, friends and listeners. However, his enormous legacy, the anecdotes, the laughter and the affection that he has earned during all these years will endure eternally on the airwaves.
