Dr. Pablo Juárez del Dago, director of the Robotic Surgery Unit of GUA Urology and Andrology Office and San Roque University Hospitals, together with his team and accompanied by Dr. Alberto Breda, world leader in robotic surgery and President of the Association European Urological Robotics have been carried out, in a pioneering way, at the beginning of this month of September the first three radical prostatectomies in the Canary Islands with the Medtronic RAS Hugo™ system, an intervention in which the prostate gland and adjacent tissues are removed.

This type of surgery is minimally invasive, allowing for a faster recovery and reducing side effects. Patients have received the discharge report only 24 hours after having undergone surgery. Each intervention lasted approximately two and a half hours, and in addition to the doctors, three nurses, an anesthetist and a urologist assistant were present in the operating room.
For patients, robot-assisted radical prostatectomy has the advantages of minimizing sequelae such as erectile dysfunction or urinary incontinence, decreased blood loss, a lower risk of complications, a decrease in the patient's days with a catheter, and the reduction of pain. In addition, it offers greater comfort and well-being, since the surgical intervention, with very small scars, interferes less with your daily life and allows you to return to your usual activities sooner.

“The three surgeries have been carried out satisfactorily without complications and with a postoperative admission of less than twenty-four hours. The evolution of the three patients is optimal and the prognosis regarding the sexual potency and urinary continence of the three patients is very good. We are very satisfied with the result.
We have started with the prostate but we are already working on the design of the program to operate on kidney, bladder and other organ cancers with the aim of offering the canaries the best treatments and the most advanced technology. Working with this type of innovative technique improves the surgical process by 40-50% compared to other types of surgeries and minimizes side effects such as alterations in sexual function or continence. “This robot-assisted surgery system places us at the highest level of excellence in medical technology.” TOsigned by Dr. Pablo Juárez del Dago.
Advantages of the RAS Hugo™ Robotic Surgery System: It revolutionizes the meaning of performing robot-assisted surgery and is the first to arrive in the Canary Islands. Its modular and portable design, together with powerful analysis capabilities, a new system in the controls of the wrist instruments, an open console that facilitates communication between the surgeon and his team or a 4k 3D screen that provides greater definition and precision vision with a great capacity for differentiation of tissues and structures in the surgical field, provides greater safety for the patient with the advantages provided by robotic surgery such as decreased postoperative pain, less need for blood transfusion, reduced hospital stay hospitalization and early return to daily activities.
