The first climber in history to win the titles of Spanish bouldering and difficulty champion in the same year (2006) will be the godfather of the commemorative events of the Mountain Club that directs the operation of the Municipal Climbing School of San Bartolomé de Tirajana
The renowned and award-winning Spanish professional climber Edu Marín will offer this Friday in Maspalomas a specific technical and master day on 'Managing the fear of falling'. It will be at the Climbing Wall of the Municipal Pavilion of San Fernando, from four in the afternoon to nine at night.
Edu Marín started competing when he was 13 years old. In the youth category he was champion of Spain in difficulty in 1999 and in 2000. He was also European youth champion in 2002 and world champion in 2003. In 2004, after being runner-up in the world in Edinburgh, he decided to compete in the queen category. His first absolute test was the world cup in Chamonix (France). He would later reveal himself as one of the best climbers in the world with his third places in Shanghai and Singapore. In 2012 he decided to retire from competition.
The educational day that will be offered this Friday, suitable for all levels, is organized within the commemorative events of the 25th anniversary of the Topatras Mountaineering and Climbing Club, responsible for the Municipal Climbing School of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council.
Marín's intervention will focus on the causes of fear and the repercussions of said emotion on the performance of climbers and athletes; on how to manage anxiety; in learning to fall safely, and how to improve climbing performance and safety. Registrations can be made until this Thursday through the Club's social networks.
In addition, Topatras will also offer this Saturday at 18:00 p.m., at the Sociocultural Center of Mayor of San Fernando, the screening of the film 'Valhalla, sky of rock', where the kit is narrated in 53 minutes and with impact images. and surprising liberation of the path that Edu Marín, his father Francisco 'Novato' and his brother Alex made of the great arch of Getu (China) in 2019. The presentation of the documentary will be carried out by the protagonists themselves, who will offer a talk about your adventure on the largest and most difficult rock roof in the world. The event, open to all people who love nature and extreme sports, has the collaboration of the Sports Department headed by the fourth deputy mayor, Ramón Suárez.
The Topatras Mountain and Climbing Club was established on July 15, 1998 as an initiative of a group of climbing friends from this municipality: Álvaro Mejías Cabeza, who served as the first president of the institution; Jorge Ortega García, to whom the vice presidency fell; Moisés Mejías Cabeza, who assumed the position of treasurer; Jesús Pascual Sanz, who was the secretary and also the first monitor of the Municipal Climbing School, and Ramón Ventoso Hevia and Roberto Hernández Navarro, who served as first and second members, respectively.
Since 2018, Topatras has been chaired by climber Alejandro Martín Franco, who for a decade has been working as a Climbing School monitor along with Jorge Ramírez and Diego Cazorla. At the moment, fifty children between 8 and 16 years old, and another fifty adult climbers, with different degrees of learning, are actively participating in the Club. The Club has around 180 climbing athletes registered in the Canarian Mountain Federation
The objectives of Topatras focus on the promotion of climbing as an alternative sport, even in educational centers, and on recruiting promising young people to form the local pool of climbers. Over the years the Club has produced several national and regional champions such as Samuel Calvente, who even competed internationally, and Maja Jonjic.
San Bartolomé de Tirajana offers climbers the largest number of sectors or schools on the entire island: Fataga Dam, Ayagaures, Chira Dam, La Candelilla, El Berriel (boulder area) and Ayacata.
