The Association of Tourist Municipalities of Spain (ATM), of which the San Bartolomé de Tirajana city council is a part, has denounced this Wednesday that they have to face the provision of services to an oversized population, which is why they demand to increase their financing to Madrid. A study commissioned by the AMT on the new definition of 'tourist municipality' calls for a new financing framework to address the multiple services to residents and visitors. The eight municipalities integrated into the Alliance of Sun and Beach Tourist Municipalities (AMT) host a population that multiplies by six their usual number of residents in high seasons, which is why they demand an increase in their financing to be able to guarantee the provision of services.
Salou, Calviá, Adeje, Arona, Torremolinos, Lloret de Mar, San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Benidorm lead the recovery of the Spanish tourism sector with a significant number of visitors during the summer, but at the same time they have to face an increase in demand of public services that represent an economic cost that is difficult to face. The eight tourist municipalities are drawing on the national tourism sector to boost the Spanish economy, but they need the collaboration of supra-municipal administrations to face the extra cost that this represents for municipal coffers sized only for the resident population.
The president of the AMT Sol y Playa and mayor of Salou, Pere Granados, emphasizes that the eight destinations that make up the Alliance continue to face the expenses of serving such a significant volume of population, far above the usual residents, and constantly growing, especially in the summer months. In this regard, Granados highlights the study carried out for the redefinition of 'tourist municipality' where its requirements and conditions are reformulated, while a new framework is promoted to access better financing that guarantees services. The eight municipalities integrated into the Alliance of Sun and Beach Tourist Municipalities face the summer season, knowing the data for the first six months of the year, in which these localities have welcomed 10,34% of the total number of tourists they have had throughout the year. country.
Of the 50,72 million tourists who arrived in Spain until June, 5,25 did so in the AMT municipalities, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). By origin, the data reveal that in this first half of the year there have been 1,5 million tourists of Spanish nationality who have chosen Adeje, Arona, Benidorm, Calvià, Lloret de Mar, Salou, San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Torremolinos as destination. This figure is increased by those of an international nature, a total of 3,8 million, which represents 14,8% of the slightly more than 25 million international tourists who arrived in Spain.
The president of the AMT Sol y Playa and mayor of Salou, Pere Granados, emphasizes that these eight traditional holiday destinations continue to contribute to the recovery of the sector by betting on sustainability, job creation and the implementation of new technologies, all This combines joint action between public administrations and the private sector representing hoteliers, hoteliers and service companies.
