The Canary Islands Executive received the news of its exemption from the use of ecological fuels imposed for airplanes that operate in airports of the European Union, however, it also stated that it wanted to position the islands at the forefront in the production of these fuels.

This September, the European Parliament approved new regulations requiring that, by 2050, at least 70% of the fuels used by aircraft at airports in the European Union be green, and from 2025, at least 2% must be green fuels. sustainable.

However, the Canary Islands and other Outermost Regions (ORP) have been exempt from complying with these rules on ecological fuels. Some measures that are part of the “fit for 55” package of the European Union to improve sustainability in aviation and whose exemption was celebrated by the Government of the Canary Islands, which through its vice president, Manuel Domínguez, showed its satisfaction with this decision. due to the relevance of air transport on the islands.

Domínguez also pointed out that, despite this exemption, the Canary Islands wants to position itself as a reference in the production of these fuels, known as SAF for its acronym in English, in order to “diversify the economy of the islands, strengthen its industrial fabric and advance in the field of sustainability and the creation of green jobs for the archipelago” in his own words.

In this regard, the previous Canarian government committed to Iberia to promote a sustainable fuel production plant after a meeting held this same year between the previous president, Ángel Víctor Torres, with the executive president of Iberia, Javier Sánchez, and the president of Iberia Express, Carlos Gómez.
