The Arguineguín Dock is once again affected by the overcrowding of canoes. A total of 26 remain in the port facility right now, 7 of these sunk in the sea. The Mogán City Council demands that the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands immediately remove these boats, which pose a potential risk to the safety of the people and property around them due to the amount of waste and even fuel they still carry.
This problem is not new. In September 2019, there was already an accumulation of this type of vessels and in 2020, with the intensification of the migration crisis, the situation worsened considerably. Then, after repeated formal requests – four – sent by the mayor of Mogán, Onalia Bueno, to the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands, Maritime Rescue came to carry out the withdrawal. On up to three more occasions, it was the Mogán City Council that favored the removal action as well as the subsequent cleaning and disinfection of the facilities in coordination with the entity that has jurisdiction over the dock.
Now overcrowding is repeated in Arguineguín due to the incessant arrival of migrants to the coasts of the archipelago, which could lead to a serious public health problem because the canoes are full of belongings, waste and even fuel, part of which is dumped into the sea. At the bottom of the pier there is a large amount of remains, since seven canoes have ended up sinking in the place over time.
To what has been described, it must be added that this accumulation hinders the maneuver of ships in the port and generates a detrimental image in an area of great tourist attraction.
