The municipal hiking program 'San Bartolomé Camina' has been recovered

MASPALOMAS24H Friday, September 29, 2023

The Department of Sports of the City Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana has wanted to recover the spirit of the municipality's walkers, who are many and very brave, and has already secured that at the end of October the municipal hiking program 'San Bartolomé Camina', with the forecast of five organized walks until the end of the year.

To recover this sports program, the City Council put out to public tender in mid-September a minor service contract for the organization, coordination and provision of the hiking program for the months of October to December, for 15.000 euros. This has finally been resolved with its award to the company Cmueven for 13.120 euros. The contract includes for each of the five walks the technical deployment of an expert guide and two accompanying monitors, in addition to a preventive service armed by two health workers and a support ambulance.

For the Sports Councilor, Ramón Suárez Ojeda, the recovery of the municipal hiking program “became a priority, because it was one of the sports demands most requested by the neighbors. For this reason, in addition to this specific contract that allows us to get started, the Department has already launched the administrative procedure to put out to tender a new multi-year contract, so that this public service is maintained in the coming years,” he says.

Great acceptance

The hiking activities organized by this City Council were paralyzed with the Covid pandemic and the previous Corporation never again showed interest in resuming its march, despite the enormous demand and the great acceptance they had by the local and tourist population, with a average of almost 100 participants in all its days.

The last walks that were organized were on January 25 and 26, 2020. The first, for adults, from the Chira Dam to the Philippines, to publicize the enormous natural and landscape potential of the Barranco de Soria-Arquineguín, and the second for families, much more bearable, from the Caldera de Los Marteles to Guayadeque.

The San Bartolomé Camina sports program began in 2005, and during its active career it managed to become a benchmark for hiking and nature activities for the rest of the municipalities of Gran Canaria. Until it stopped cold, its annual program included organizing family hikes, hiking through the islands of the Archipelago and through Spanish national parks, as well as summer activities.
