Canary Islands on pre-alert for calima

 

 

On Sunday, October 1, intervals of high clouds, tending to slightly cloudy in the second half of the day. In addition, on northern coasts, intervals of low clouds in the early morning and at the end of the day. Calima, which will mainly affect inland areas and slopes facing southeast.

 

Temperatures with few changes in the northern half and a slight rise in the southern half, where maximum temperatures will locally reach 34 ºC, especially in the western and southern midlands. Light to moderate wind from the northeast on the coasts, somewhat more intense in the extreme southeast and northwest, especially from the afternoon. In the midlands and summits, light wind of variable direction, with a predominance of the eastern component in the midlands in central hours and the southern component in the early morning peaks.

 

For Monday, October 2, the skies will generally be slightly cloudy or clear, with some morning intervals of low clouds on the northern coast. Calima that will tend to decrease at low levels, especially affecting the midlands and summits at the end of the day.

 

Temperatures with few changes, with some slight rise in the maximums in the western and southern midlands, where they may exceed 34-35 ºC. Moderate northeasterly wind on coasts, somewhat more intense on the southeastern slope and extreme west. In the midlands and summits, light wind of variable direction, tending to a moderate east component during the central hours. Breezes on southern coasts.

The Government of the Canary Islands, through the General Directorate of Emergencies, declares the pre-alert situation due to haze in the Canary Islands, starting at 03:00 on September 30.

This decision is made taking into account the information available and in application of the Specific Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands for Risks of Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).

• Try to keep doors and windows closed, and avoid going outside if you suffer from chronic respiratory diseases.
• Make sure you have your usual medication.
• Drink plenty of fluids and avoid dry environments.
• Do not do severe physical exercise while this situation lasts.
• If you feel unwell, see your doctor.
• In this situation, visibility is greatly reduced. If you are traveling on the road, take extreme caution, turn on your lights and slow down.
