Maspalomas gains weight with the Hispasat Amazonas Nexus satellite

To connect the most remote areas of Greenland, a system has been designed with six stations that channel the connectivity of populations on the eastern and western coasts and a gateway in Maspalomas that converts the satellite signal and links it to the Internet. The Amazonas Nexus is a new satellite, with advanced technology, since July 2023 it has coverage over the entire American continent, the North and South Atlantic corridors (areas of large air and maritime traffic) and Greenland. The satellite position of 61º West is an ideal location to reach even the northernmost areas of this region, with Maspalomas being one of the key pieces in this operation.

In the case of Tasiilaq, at the top of the town there is a Tusass A/S antenna covered with a radome more than 7 meters high, transparent for the satellite signal, which protects it from the extreme weather conditions suffered there in the cold months. Hispasat has signed an agreement with Tele Greenland, the national communications company of Greenland, for the contracting of space capacity on the Amazonas Nexus satellite until the end of its useful life. The agreement will allow Tele Greenland to provide Internet access services in all remote cities and towns in northern and eastern Greenland that have satellite service.

Through this capacity, services will also be offered to mining companies and can be used as a backup system for the restoration of communication services in emergency cases. The Amazonas Nexus satellite is under construction by Thales Alenia Space. The mission has been named Greensat, which underlines the long-term strategic alliance established between both companies in order to drive major improvements in Greenland's most remote communities. For Hispasat it marks the beginning of a long-term relationship with Tele Greenland and with the Danish government, to whom we thank the trust they have placed in Hispasat by choosing us as a communications service provider for Greenland."
