The managers of the 70 feline colonies of San Bartolomé de Tirajana are summoned

 

The City Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana has called this Wednesday, October 4, to all the managers who are caring for and supervising the urban feline colonies registered in this municipality, to inform them and prepare them in the application of the new Law for the protection of rights and animal welfarehttps://www.boe.es/eli/es/l/2023/03/28/7/con), which came into force on September 29, which stipulates that city councils are responsible for community cats and the management of their colonies.

 

The call is made by the Department of Health directed by Councilor Araceli Armas Cruz, and will be held in the assembly hall of the Centro Socio Cultural del Mayor, in San Fernando de Maspalomas, at 18.00:70 p.m. The meeting is addressed on a technical and free basis to the hundred volunteers who daily monitor and care for the 1.800 urban cat colonies that the City Council already has controlled from Bahía Feliz to Las Meloneras, where around XNUMX cats are counted.

 

This meeting of managers is included within the insular program for the management of urban feline colonies that the Cabildo and the City Council are carrying out with the collaboration and participation of the Official College of Veterinarians of Las Palmas. 

 

At this meeting, the managers will be informed about the contents and application of the new animal protection law, which in Chapter VI, and specifically in its article 38, highlights the need to proceed with population control of all community cats in order to reduce progressively its population while maintaining its protection as companion animals. For this, the mandatory castration or surgical sterilization of all cats, their deworming and their identification by means of a microchip, which is registered in the name of the City Council, are stipulated. 

 

 

 

 

In compliance with the law, the City Council's new campaign has planned the capture, chipping, sterilization, deworming and return of approximately 120 cats, although that number could increase with vacancies that are not covered by other municipalities on the Island. In this task Half a dozen veterinary clinics in the municipality will be involved. 

 

At this time, an action protocol is being put together with the Town Council and the College of Veterinarians to determine which of the 70 cat colonies that are registered in the municipality should be acted upon as a priority. Everything indicates that it will begin in the San Agustín urbanization to finish closing the entire Bahía Feliz and El Veril area, and leaving it 100% neutered and chipped.

 

The City Council chaired by Marco Aurelio Pérez is well advanced in this regard, since it already began working along these lines in 2015, with the application of the Pact for Animal Welfare.
