The “extension” of the summer that is being experienced these days in the Canary Islands with an episode of extreme heat to which is added the presence of haze has caused some parents in the municipality to show their concern about the situation of their children in the classrooms
The heat and haze alert in a large part of the Canary archipelago has caused some parents in San Bartolomé de Tirajana to express their concern about the situation of their children during classes, which mostly occur during the hottest hours.
Specifically, the parents who have issued a joint complaint are those of the students of the IES Aguañac, in El Tablero. The institute, which has been in existence for decades and is one of the most recognized in the municipality and in the southern part of the island, lacks air conditioning in many of the classes where classes are taught, which is why the parents of the students have requested suspend classes or, at least, teach them again electronically as has already happened during the pandemic.
According to the parents, the ESO students at least have fans to cool the classrooms, but the Baccalaureate students do not have any type of cooling system, something especially worrying considering that in the middle of October it has reached 36 degrees in the middle of the morning in Maspalomas.
Parents not only focus on the inspection that has rejected their request to suspend or teach online classes, but also on the state of infrastructure that does not have a cooling system that allows teaching activity to be carried out normally during these episodes of heat that are increasingly common and that leave temperatures close to 40 degrees during school hours.
The need to renew the center's infrastructure is such that they affirm that "many parents decide not to take their children and look for other centers to enroll them in." For this reason, these parents who have decided to raise their voices about the situation experienced at the center have asked the regional Executive for a series of measures such as the creation of an action protocol for these situations of extreme heat, measures that allow the delivery of classes on equal terms with the rest of the centers in the municipality and on the island and, above all, an effective plan to begin renewing the center's infrastructure.
