An endless summer: another heat alert in Gran Canaria

 

Gran Canaria does not leave the loop experienced this summer, where high temperatures and warnings, pre-alerts and alerts became the usual trend and where, unfortunately, the extreme heat claimed several lives in the archipelago, one of them in San Bartolomé from Tirajana.

 

 

 

In the middle of October and with autumn already begun, the General Directorate of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands has issued an alert declaration for maximum temperatures on the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife. The rest of the Archipelago is in a pre-alert situation. In addition, an alert is maintained for the risk of forest fires in the western province and Gran Canaria.

 

Precisely, in Tenerife some outbreaks and reactivations of the devastating forest fire last August have been reported. Reactivations that fortunately have stabilized but have left nearly 3000 evacuees as a precaution on the neighboring island.

 

It is expected that both Gran Canaria and Tenerife will exceed 30 degrees this weekend, even reaching 37 degrees in the midlands and the southern and southeastern areas of Gran Canaria. For its part, in Tenerife it is expected that the maximum temperatures will not exceed 35 degrees, a worrying forecast taking into account that, as has been seen, many parts of Tenerife's mountains are prone to reactivations of the August forest fire.

 

From 112 they have issued a series of recommendations such as avoiding going out during the hottest hours, looking for shaded areas, staying hydrated, avoiding copious and excessively hot meals or lowering the blinds during sunny hours and opening the windows during the night. night to cool the rooms. The emergency service places special emphasis on being attentive and paying greater attention and care during this alert to the most vulnerable people (children, people with pathologies or the elderly, among others).
