The Environmental Unit of the Local Police has processed 17 files for abandonment of waste in the last year
The Environment and Animal Welfare Unit of the Local Police of Santa Lucía de Tirajana opened disciplinary proceedings against a citizen for throwing debris from a construction site in the Tirajana ravine. The financial penalty that the alleged offender could face can reach 601.000 euros. In the last year, the Local Police of Santa Lucía de Tirajana has opened 17 disciplinary proceedings for abandonment of waste and dumping in urban areas and ravines of the municipality.
The investigation began when a Municipal Public Services worker came across the debris in the Tirajana ravine, within the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, and called the Environment and Animal Welfare Unit of the Local Police.
The agents went to the scene, and among the rubble they found two invoices, and investigations began to find out the origin of the waste. After making different phone calls and asking different people, they were finally able to locate the person who abandoned the spills in the ravine, who recognized the facts. The Local Police opened the sanctioning file and sent all the data to the fines department of the City Council and also to the Island Council of Gran Canaria, since the land where the waste was dumped is property of the Island Corporation.
The Councilor for Waste Collection, Street Cleaning and Sanctions, Francisco Guedes, said that “this new file demonstrates the importance of the Environmental Unit of the Local Police, which in the last year has opened 17 sanctioning files for discharges in different areas, both urban as in ravines and open fields.” Guedes recalls that "companies are obliged to take waste from works or discharges to authorized managers, because if not they may be committing crimes against the environment that are already classified in the penal code."
Private citizens can take their waste, previously separated, to the clean point located on Avenida del Atlántico number 361, which is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 8 a.m. to 20 p.m. Its telephone number is 928734147. In addition, the Cabildo of Gran Canaria has a service of mobile clean points that travel through the different municipalities of the island. It is a mobile container with different compartments, in which you can deposit household waste such as small electronic devices, batteries, fluorescent lights, clothing and footwear, used cooking oil, etc. On Tuesdays of the first and fourth week of the month there is a council container in our municipality, its location is reported on the social networks of Gran Canaria Recicla.
