Will the problems between Meeting Point (FTI Touristik) and Grassroots Unionists affect Maspalomas?

The unions hope that the problems at Meeting Point, which left Maspalomas to locate in Las Palmas, will not have to affect the chain's activity in the south of Gran Canaria. Canary Islands Grassroots Unionists (SBC) hold a rally every Friday in front of the Hotel Labranda Costa Adeje, property of the company Meeting Point Canarias, to demand the reinstatement of the 55 workers dismissed in an Employment Regulation File (ERE) that, according to the union, aimed to eliminate SBC members and staff with a high percentage of absenteeism due to poor working conditions.

The general secretary of SBC, Manuel Fitas, has declared that the ERE was agreed with the union Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) with compensation lower than that corresponding to unfair dismissal and in deferred payments, which affected the workers. In addition, he has stated that the company has hired personnel to replace those laid off.

Fitas has reported that the union has filed a lawsuit for violation of freedom of association before the Social Chamber of the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC), whose ruling is pending. Likewise, he has announced that SBC has challenged the salary agreement of the Hotel Labranda Costa Adeje, which establishes a "double discriminatory salary scale that fails to comply with the principle of equal work, equal salary, provided for in article 28 of the Workers' Statute"

The union has announced that it will continue to combine legal action and mobilizations until Meeting Point Canarias respects freedom of association and complies with the labor rights of its workers. For this reason, it has called new gatherings at the doors of the Labranda Costa Adeje Hotel on the first Friday of each month.
