The best athletes in the world meet at SKY Gran Canaria

The sixth edition of SKY Gran Canaria, which will take place from October 13th to 15th, 2023, was officially presented this Tuesday. The competition will host the Finalissima of the World Cup, part of the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA) international circuit. Top athletes from 21 countries will gather this weekend in Agaete, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, and Artenara.

 

At the presentation, held at the Gran Canaria Tourism headquarters, were present; the Minister of Tourism of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Carlos Álamo, the Councilor for Education and Sports of the Agaete City Council, María Alemán del Rosario, Councilor for Education and Sports of the Agaete City Council, Ramón Suárez, Councilor for Sports of San Bartolomé de Tirajana , and Orlando Montesdeoca, race director. Carlos Álamo, Tourism Councilor of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria: “Without a doubt it is one of the most important mountain races held on the island. The SKY Gran Canaria is a test that allows palpable visibility of the attractive landscapes that Gran Canaria offers.” Álamo pointed out that “the race that crosses the island, in its different modalities, unites the north with the south passing through the summit, and runs through a large part of our main tourist municipalities. It is a great showcase that will make runners enjoy some of the most emblematic locations”

The Councilor for Education and Sports of the Agaete City Council, María Alemán del Rosario, expressed her congratulations, on behalf of the local institution: "It is not the first time that we have had this relevant event in our municipality, but year after year it has surpassed the level, and the fact that it is the first time that the World Cup is held in Spain is an example of this." The councilor, on behalf of the corporation, assures that “Agaete is proud to have three of the goals.”

 

Ramón Suárez, Councilor for Sports of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, acknowledges that “the council’s participation in this race strengthens our tourism brand, Maspalomas Costa Canaria,” and adds, “it is important for the municipality to be present at this Finalissima and to support events with international reach, since we are also a very strong sports destination, especially for outdoor sports,” he concludes. The southern municipality will be the starting point for the Canary Islands UltraTrail Championship.

 

For his part, Orlando Montesdeoca, race director, is confident that “this weekend will be a success in participation.” The head of the event points out that: "if the temperatures are respectable, you will be able to enjoy the best athletes in the world, male and female, some of the top 10 and part of the top 20." Some athletes have already landed on the island to put on a great show. The organization recognizes that “it will be a Trail Running festival in Gran Canaria.”
