Municipal officials highlighted their work in Tenefé at the Institutional Event for Rural Women's Day
This Friday night, the Santa Lucía de Tirajana City Council held the Institutional Event for the International Day of Rural Women at the Sardina House of Culture. This year was dedicated to the women salt workers of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, and a special tribute was paid to the salt artisan Dolores Santana Hernández, who during a period of her life worked in the Salt Flats of Tenefé.
The event was presented by the singer Thania Gil outside the old Sardina hermitage, where some salt mines were installed and Thania, dressed as a salt mine, spoke about the work carried out by women salt artisans such as Dolores Santana Hernández. In the overture Thania Gil was accompanied by the timplist David el majorero. The rest of the Institutional Event was held inside the Sardina House of Culture, and at the end it featured a performance by the Kanarii group.
During the event, organized by the departments of Equality and Diversity and the Primary Sector, the mayor, Francisco García, the councilor for Equality and Diversity, Olga Cáceres and the councilor of the Primary Sector, Francisco Guedes, spoke.
The mayor highlighted the importance of the Salinas de Tenefé and pointed out that “the conservation of this legacy has a name and surname, those of Dolores Santana Hernández; those of a woman who has been part of the preservation as cultural heritage of an element such as salt and the Salinas de la Punta de Tenefé that, today, has become a hallmark of our town, becoming one of the most recognized in the entire Canary Islands.” García added that “Salineros women have been guardians of an ancestral tradition; their work is a reminder of the importance of valuing and preserving local cultural traditions that often go unnoticed.”
The Councilor for Equality and Diversity, Olga Cáceres, valued the efforts of the rural women of the municipality because “They, with their effort and determination, worked on land or at sea, without salaries to compensate them, the men of the home They planted the land, rented the salt flats or were simply workers in the salt flats, but they were always present, helping the family economy grow.” Cáceres added that “today we recognize the person of Doña Dolores Santana Hernández, for her work and involvement in the salt mines and with Santa Lucía.”
The Councilor for the Primary Sector, Francisco Guedes, highlighted that “They are vital for the survival of the rural world, since they have a greater capacity for adaptation and initiative, and they usually lead the development of family economies, neighborhoods and society as a whole. , as is the case of Dolores Santana Hernández." The mayor added that “many times without even lightening the day, Dolores would prepare her bag to go to the tomato growers with the children in tow; and that in the afternoon she would prepare to walk to Las Salinas to work the salt, with more than one escarranchao boy up to the waist.”
During the event, the documentary about the experiences of a salt mine woman was also screened. The tribute ended with a performance by the group Kanarii.
