La Vega de San Mateo will host the XNUMXth edition of the Canary Islands Regional Wine, Cheese and Honey Fair

With the aim of disseminating and promoting the consumption of processed products from the rural areas of the Canary archipelago, the Association of Municipalities of Medianías organizes the twelfth edition of the Canary Islands Regional Wine, Cheese and Honey FairThe event, which will be held on November 4 and 5 in the town of Vega de San Mateo and will host the presence of 35 local product brands, is financed by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria through the Ministry of Economic Development, Industry, Commerce and Crafts, directed by Minerva Alonso.

 

Present at the presentation of the XNUMXth edition of the Fair were the president of the Commonwealth, Juan Francisco Perera, the mayor of Vega de San Mateo, Alexis Ramos, as well as the manager of the Commonwealth and councilors of the municipalities of Valsequillo. and San Bartolomé de Tirajana.

 

As highlighted by the president of the island institution during the presentation, Antonio Morales, the Fair “has become an invaluable tool to establish the population in the rural areas of our geography, to boost the rural economy, to maintain business activities linked to the primary sector and bring the final consumer closer to the producer of origin.” 

 

And, according to Morales, the primary sector is “very important because it reduces the ecological footprint, we eat healthier, reduces the risk of fires and adds an element of security in this context of energy crisis and political instability to know that we have that autonomy ”. For this reason, as he concluded, “it is one of the axes of our government but without the participation of the municipalities and the men and women of the middle areas it would be impossible.”

 

The president also wanted to point out a fact that demonstrates this commitment, and that is that Gran Canaria is the only island that does not lose agricultural land, in fact, it gains 8,3% in crop area in recent years. 

 

Given therefore the importance of the sector, in this edition the Fair will show the professional and tourist sector, as well as all visitors, high quality products made by hand in the midlands and peaks, combining tradition with innovation, so that They will be able to taste and purchase a varied sample of transformed agricultural products, to participate in various activities including screenings of short films, tastings, musical performances and workshops, as explained by the mayor of San Mateo, Alexis Ramos, who advocated for "defending and promoting the products local, taking into account the difficulties faced by our primary sector", support actions must be promoted such as "this showcase that San Mateo offers once again with this great event in which more than 35 producers will participate."

 

Within this program, activities stand out such as the presentation of the “Eat goat for Christmas” campaign, run by Asoquegran (Association of artisan cheese makers of Gran Canaria), which includes the tasting of goat-based dishes by the Hospitality and Food students. Tourism of the San Cristóbal Integrated Vocational Training Center; the cheese tasting that will be taught by the cheesemaker and chemical engineer Judit Sivela under the title 'History and curiosities of cheese making' -with limited places-; Silvela will also offer another workshop on sheep wool, “Resource or waste?”, and there will be a commented tasting of Gran Canaria wines, by Idaira Rodríguez Medina, member of the CRDO Vinos de Gran Canaria Tasting Committee.

 

In short, it is about “enjoying a showcase for top quality products, made with care by the primary sector of the island's midlands,” said the mayor of the host municipality, who wanted to thank the island institution for its support and invite all the citizens of the Island to attend the “increasingly consolidated” Fair.
