Some 200 walkers from around twenty countries participated this year in the Gran Canaria WalkingFestival, held between October 19 and 22 and organized by the Gran Canaria Natural & Active association with the sponsorship of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria through Turismo de Gran Canaria. These figures show a new record of participation and countries of origin, and consolidates this international hiking meeting as one of the best attractions to learn about the nature of the island, its archaeological and ethnographic heritage and its gastronomy through the practice of Active turism.
Specifically, this twelfth edition has had the participation of hikers from, among other countries, Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom and the Nordic countries (Sweden, Denmark and Finland). These participation data show the growing interest, both from residents and foreigners, in discovering the most beautiful and spectacular corners of the island with the help of expert bilingual guides, learning about its rich culture and varied gastronomy, as well as fascinating rural establishments located in strategic places for resting or starting outdoor activities.
This year's four routes have served especially to discover the spectacular landscapes that go from Artenara to Montañón Negro, crossing places of high archaeological interest until reaching the Casa Rural María Luisa, in the municipality of Moya, where hikers were able to rest and regain strength. . The second route served to observe majestic cliffs, old agricultural and fishing docks, a bufadero, archaeological remains and natural pools along a route that started in Sardina del Norte and ended in Agaete. The next day's route was a great opportunity to introduce hikers to the 'green heart' of Gran Canaria, entering what was once the Selva de Doramas until reaching Laguna de Valleseco on a route that started in the municipality. of Firgas. The last of the routes passed through the municipality of San Mateo, on a route that allowed participants to cross lush natural landscapes and discover water dams until they reached the Hotel Rural Las Calas, where they could relax and taste typical products of Canarian gastronomy.
Bet on eco-friendly and local products
As in previous editions, the Gran Canaria Natural & Active Association has continued with its eco-friendly commitment with the use of paper packaging and the total elimination of plastic in its snack-type lunches or tastings, always based on genuinely Canarian products. In addition, for the fifth consecutive year it has had the support and collaboration of Pricemesa cardboard water, packaged in sustainable containers from wood extracted from certified forests (FSC).
And, for the second consecutive year, it has also had the support of the Gran Canaria Wine Route, an association formed by producers on the island dedicated to promoting and developing wine tourism and wine culture in Gran Canaria and which offers residents and visitors a unique wine tourism experience.
