Gran Canaria receives about 10% more foreign passengers in September and 15% more in the accumulated amount of the year
The insular Minister of Tourism, Carlos Álamo, is satisfied with the data, with the year-on-year comparison and assures that “everything indicates that the annual records of 2019 will be exceeded.”
The tourist destination of Gran Canaria counted 243.324 foreign passengers in September, 9,63% more than in the same month of 2022, according to a preview of AENA data, and presents an annual cumulative total, between January and September, of 2.580.848. tourists, which represents an increase of 15,67% compared to the same period of the previous year. The average stay increased to 7,14 days, 1,42% more than the previous year, with foreign clients adding an average of 8,48 days. The occupancy rate per room was 78,7% of the total and 66,83% of the available places were filled. The total accumulated overnight stays are 2.136.214 dates, which implies an increase of 13,4% year-on-year.
“We are satisfied with the development of the summer, which has been considerably better than the previous one and has allowed a turnover volume for the island that is historic, in the absence of obtaining official data. This places us in a favorable scenario for the start of the high season and with the more than real feeling that the records of the historic 2019 will be surpassed and that it will be greatly surpassed in terms of billing, which is our priority," explained the Tourism Minister. of Gran Canaria before the data for September.
Clients from the United Kingdom were the ones with the greatest presence in September, confirming a trend that began at the beginning of summer and that places the British as the main client on the island after the summer period. The former improved their section in the sector statistics with a year-on-year increase of 7,08% for the British and 6,46% for the German market, which shows an upward trend after the financial problems of recent years that included a call from the government to the population to apply containment in spending.
The markets that improve the most are the Norwegian (42%), the Irish (41%), the Swedish (50%) and the Danish (24%). The Italian client falls slightly (-1,8%) along with the Moroccan (-4,8%) and Portuguese (-4%). On the other hand, the Moroccan is an international client that has improved its presence on the island in the year-on-year comparison (42%). The Norwegians and Irish command this category, sharing an increase of 36% and a considerable volume of passengers, with 46.155 passengers in the first market and 21.369 in the second case.
