The Government denies that a tourist moratorium will be applied to housing rentals

The director of Planning, Training and Tourism Promotion of the Government of the Canary Islands, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, sends a message of peace of mind to the owners of legalized holiday homes on the islands

The Ministry of Tourism and Employment denies and clarifies that the Government of the Canary Islands does not contemplate stopping tourist rentals with a moratorium when applying the future Law on Sustainable Management of Tourist Use of Housing. "There will not be any moratorium, what we have said at all times is that the planning will determine zones of zero growth in municipalities or tourist centers, while in others there will be indicators to establish the percentage of growth of these establishments," said the director. General of Tourism Planning, Training and Promotion of the Government of the Canary Islands, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez. 

 

Such statements do not correspond to the intention of the regional Executive, which "is not going to prohibit vacation housing, the level of demand is going to be raised," said the general director. For the moment and until the application of the Law, which must be approved in Parliament, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez has sent a message to the owners of legalized vacation homes on the islands, telling them that “they can rest assured,” he stated in each one. of the information sessions that have been carried out to date "as they will have a transitional period to adapt to the new regulatory text."

The future Law on Sustainable Planning of Tourist Use of Housing is a commitment of the Minister of Tourism and Employment, Jéssica de León, for this legislature, an instrument with which to seek balance between the resident and the tourist. The future Law will have a transversal nature and will include aspects ranging from urban planning and territorial planning, the environment and, above all, “the definition of a sustainable development model for the Canary Islands in the immediate future,” she concluded.
