Nieves Lady Bareto: “It is a very significant first step to advance the coordination between both bodies”
The Minister of the Presidency, Public Administrations, Justice and Security of the Government of the Canary Islands, Nieves Lady Barreto, inaugurated this Monday the Basic Training course of the Canary Islands Police in which the 79 new officers will be trained jointly, with the same training program. agents from the General Corps of the Canarian Police and 31 from the Local Police from 8 Canarian municipalities.
It is the first time that this training is carried out at the same time for the regional police and the local police of the Canary Islands and the objective pursued with this approach is to provide homogeneous training to both bodies, to be able to attend to and provide a common response to the security challenges on the islands. “The Government of the Canary Islands is proud of its Regional Police and its Local Police and this is a very significant first step to advance the coordination between both bodies and for the implementation of an authentic Canarian security system, which is our objective” said counselor Nieves Lady Barreto.
The counselor also recalled that there are already 89 more positions called for the General Corps of the Canarian Police and that the Budget Law for 2024 contemplates the call for 100 more. In this sense, she announced that the objective is to begin deploying the Autonomous Police on all the islands, with their own detachment. “This has to be the turning point to grow to the number of personnel that is necessary to be able to assume all the powers included in the Statute of Autonomy and to be able to provide services with guarantees.”
Regarding the Local Police, Barreto proposed as a priority objective of this legislature to achieve the necessary agreement to be able to carry out a new Law of Coordination of Local Police of the Canary Islands that replaces the already obsolete law of 1997 and that adapts to the new challenges. of security.
The General Director of Security, David del Pino, also participated in the event, highlighting the commitment to consolidate a new police model in the Canary Islands. "The first step is to define those elements that characterize it, among which is, as the first pillar, joint training based on the same principles for both police forces."
For his part, the general director of Studies, Training and Research in Public Security, Juan Ramón Rodríguez, highlighted “the historical milestone” of seating, for the first time, local police officers and new members of the Autonomous Police in the same classroom. .
"The final objective pursued with this training is to be able to provide a more agile, closer and efficient citizen security service and to do so, in addition to providing the means, it is necessary to homogenize knowledge and improve operational coordination between bodies," he said. .
This Basic Training that begins today will last mid-March 2023 and is intended to provide the necessary knowledge and skills so that candidates for both police forces can be trained, humanly and technically, to guarantee citizen security and coexistence. as well as developing attitudes of respect for institutions, people and the values of the society they must serve.
