Fabio González and Benito Ramírez released seven shearwaters affected by light pollution

The Cabildo of Gran Canaria and the UD Las Palmas have joined forces in this initiative in an effort to raise awareness among the population.

The Las Palmas Sports Union players Fabio González and Benito Ramírez accompanied the island director of Environment of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Manuel Amador, and Environment technicians, to release ten of the 24 shearwaters that were rescued last night when they were trying to take off for their first flight and fell due to light pollution.

The Cabildo of Gran Canaria and the UD Las Palmas have joined forces in this initiative in an effort to raise awareness among the population about the importance of reducing this type of light pollution and protecting these birds declared critically endangered.

The insular director of Environment of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Manuel Amador, expressed his concern about the impact of light pollution on local biodiversity and also explained how this collaboration arises after the fall of two shearwaters at the last meeting of the UD Las Palmas: "In the Gran Canaria Stadium two shearwaters fell last Friday and today we symbolically released 10 shearwaters with the players Benito and Fabio to whom we are eternally grateful for their involvement, as well as the management of the Union Sports that has given us all the facilities for this commitment to society and the environment.”

Light pollution is a serious problem that affects many species, particularly seabirds. These shearwaters are just one example of the victims of light pollution. It is essential to take action to reduce this threat and protect our natural environment.

UD Las Palmas players, Fabio González and Benito Ramírez, shared their enthusiasm for participating in the release of the shearwaters and raising awareness in the community about the importance of protecting the island's wildlife.

"The other day was a clear example of what happens daily, especially at this time of year, with the Cory's shearwater. Light pollution is something that affects them a lot and unfortunately we had to experience it firsthand," explained Fabio González.

In addition, he also expressed his joy at being able to contribute to making the situation of the shearwaters visible, “Happy and happy because almost all of them have been able to take flight and are super happy, I have already told you that if you can invite me to more releases like those of the turtles that we were there Speaking, I am delighted,” added the player.

Benito Ramírez added: “A nice experience releasing the shearwaters, in the end without the help of these professionals they would not take flight so I am very happy to be able to help”
