The former Canary Islands president will assume the Territorial Policy portfolio, which until now was held by Isabel Rodríguez, spokesperson for the Government of Spain.
Ángel Víctor Torres will be the next Minister of Territorial Policy in the coalition government of Pedro Sánchez. A decision that has been rumored in recent weeks due to Torres' key role in the negotiations with the Canarian Coalition to support Sánchez's investiture.
Torres won the elections in the Canary Islands last May, but a coalition agreement between the Canarian Coalition and the Popular Party did not allow him to serve a second term in office against the Canary Islands Executive. Despite Pedro Sánchez not achieving the presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands, he seems to have recognized his contribution by having the Canarian in his Council of Ministers.
The political career of Ángel Víctor Torres, with a degree and a doctorate in Hispanic Philology from the University of La Laguna, worked as a secondary school teacher of Language and Literature in various institutes in Gran Canaria between 1991 and 2000.
His rise in local politics included his election as mayor of Arucas in the 2003 municipal elections after several years serving as a councilor. Six years later, in 2009, he held a seat as a deputy in the Congress of Deputies, replacing Juan Fernando López Aguilar, and simultaneously held the position of deputy mayor in Arucas until 2011.
In 2017, Ángel Víctor Torres was appointed general secretary of the PSOE of the Canary Islands, a position he still holds. Two years later, in the regional elections of May 2019, he led the party as a candidate for the Presidency of the Canary Islands, where he broke the hegemony of the Canary Coalition and proclaimed himself president of the Government of the Canary Islands.
With this appointment, Ángel Víctor Torres makes the leap to the front line of national politics and adds a new chapter to his extensive political career.
