'Broadening views' program against sexist cyber violence in San Bartolomé de Tirajana

The 'Broadening perspectives' session offered this Thursday at the Maspalomas Cultural Center also includes a specific presentation on the situations of women in the video game sector

The City Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana closes this Thursday the activities organized by the Department of Equality for the International Day against sexist violence by offering nearly 350 students from the municipality the educational day 'Broadening views', on sexist cyber violence and extreme situations of women in the video game sector.

 

This day will be held at the Maspalomas Cultural Center between 10:00 and 13:15 p.m., dedicated to high school and 3rd and 4th ESO students from the El Tablero I-Aguañac, Amurga, Támara, Arenas Sur and Arenas institutes. Almas, to the students of the Adult Education Center of San Fernando de Maspalomas and to the students of the three training projects in alternation with employment (Pfaes) that are being developed at the El Tablero Training Center.

 

The first of the two presentations of the 'Amplifying Views' conference will be dedicated to 'sexist cyber violence', and will be given by the director of the feminist organization Opciónate, Lidia Fernández Layos, who is an expert in gender equality and emotional intelligence and coordinator of the Insular Service for Prevention and Attention to Sexist Cyber ​​Violence.

 

Opciónate describes sexist cyber violence as “forms of aggression and violence in the online world against women, adolescents and girls, for the simple fact of being one,” and points out that it is “a term under construction that every day includes new manifestations or typologies, favored by the anonymity and communicative depersonalization of the Internet, its rapid distribution and its wide reach.” It also notes that among sexist cyber violence is “sexist cyberbullying, which encompasses attitudes, verbalizations or behaviors that are based on gender stereotypes; sexual cyberbullying; bodyshaming, which refers to commenting on and shaming women's bodies; and cyberflashing or 'penis photo', which consists of sending photos of sexual content, particularly focused on male genitalia, without the request or consent of the other person."

 

The second presentation, 'How do you play video games?', will be offered by teacher Nira Santana, researcher and expert consultant in art, gender and video games. This will bring students closer to the situation of women in the video game sector from different approaches: from the performance of women as professionals in the video game industry to the harassment that they suffer due to gender in online multiplayer games, passing through the sexist and stereotypical representations of women in the visual and narrative content of the video games themselves. With her approach to the problem, she will also try to provide solutions that the students can apply to their lives to improve their relationships during games and make a better choice and use of the video games they consume.

 

The Department of Equality directed by the second deputy mayor, Elena Álamo Vega, has taken on the organization of this day within the program of activities that the City Council has been offering to the citizens of the municipality since last October 18 on the occasion of the International Day of the Elimination of Violence against Women.

 

In addition to the presentation, the program of activities against sexist violence also includes another presentation dedicated to 'self-care through nutrition and emotional health' for this Friday afternoon, from 17:00 p.m. to 19.00:18 p.m. It will be taught by the nutritionist Claudia Rodríguez Hernández and the psychologist Naira León Acosta at the Equality Center, at XNUMX Montaña Clara Street in San Fernando de Maspalomas.
