Pre-alert for rain and storms in the Canary Islands

The General Directorate of Emergencies has declared a pre-alert for both phenomena starting at noon tomorrow, Thursday.

Precipitation, of a weak or moderate nature, will affect all the islands between Thursday and Friday and heavy downpours may occur on the western and southern slopes.

According to AEMET: this Friday, the predominance of cloudy skies with precipitation that will be more probable and frequent on the southern and western slopes during the first half of the day. They will occur in the form of a shower, they may be accompanied by storms and there is a probability that they will be strong. In the afternoon they will subside and will be weaker and more occasional, and large clearings will also open. Minimum temperatures rising 20ºC. Maximum 23ºC, in slight to moderate decrease in the northern half and without changes in the rest. The southwest wind, with strong intervals on summits in the early hours. Decreasing loosely from the west during the morning and tending northeast at the end of the day.

 

 

The Government of the Canary Islands recommends that the population take appropriate precautions in the event of rain and storms that will affect the Archipelago. This situation has caused the General Directorate of Emergencies to declare a pre-alert situation for both phenomena, starting at 12 noon on Thursday, November 30, based on the information available and in application of the Canary Islands Specific Emergency Plan for Risks. of Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).

The weather forecast indicates that there may be rainfall, which will affect all the islands between Thursday and Friday, weakly or moderately, with probable heavy downpours, mainly on the western and southern slopes. The possibility of some very strong rain showers has not been ruled out in the western half of the most important islands and at the summit of La Palma, 60 liters of water are likely to accumulate in 12 hours.

 

Likewise, it is likely that strong storms will be recorded around the most prominent islands, without ruling them out on the easternmost islands.

 

Faced with this situation, the Government of the Canary Islands recommends that the population take extreme precautions and insists on following self-protection advice to avoid risks.

 

In this sense, before the beginning of the rainy episode it is important to check the state of drains and roofs to avoid damage to the home and once it begins, it is essential to exercise extreme caution while driving, moderate speed and increase the safety distance. In addition, you should travel on main roads or highways, avoiding access to forest tracks or secondary roads.

 

As for the precautions to take into account in the event of storms accompanied by lightning or lightning, it is important to close doors and windows in the home, since air currents can attract lightning. Furthermore, if we are outdoors, it is recommended to stay away from towers, fences and other metal structures, also avoiding taking shelter under trees.
