The Minister of Tourism, Carlos Álamo, assures that this is a novelty that allows us to “expand our connectivity with the markets of northern Europe and remain one of the preferred destinations during the winter months.”
The airline airBaltic, of Latvian nationality but which operates in the countries of the Baltic region, in addition to also doing so in Finland, has inaugurated this Friday, December 1, the seasonal base that it will have in Gran Canaria during the winter season. During the peak season months of the Gran Canaria tourism sector, airBaltic will have two of its Airbus A220-300 aircraft at Gran Canaria Airport (LPA), covering a total of 10 direct routes.
“We have been behind this novelty for many years, which undoubtedly allows us to expand our connectivity with the markets of northern Europe and remain one of the preferred destinations during the winter months,” said the Minister of Tourism of Gran Canaria.
“We continue to expand connectivity. The commitment that airBaltic is making to the tourist destination of Gran Canaria has a fundamental strategic value as a destination that has always opted for the Northern European market. It not only implies a notable increase in connectivity with ten direct routes. Furthermore, Air Baltic is clearly betting on Gran Canaria, opening its first base here outside its area of influence, which includes the Baltic countries and Finland. Gran Canaria is once again very high in this client's preferences. We remember that this market reached a whopping one million customers at its peak. Today we inaugurated a new route and we are congratulated as it ensures a greater presence of tourists from northern Europe in this winter season,” added Álamo.
For his part, Martin Gauss, president and CEO of airBaltic, explained that “at airBaltic, we are pleased to celebrate the launch of our seasonal base in Gran Canaria. While we park two planes in Gran Canaria, we will connect this wonderful island with destinations in northern Europe. This is airBaltic's first seasonal base, as well as the first base outside the Baltics and Finland. Taking advantage of the strong and growing demand during the winter months between northern Europe and the Canary Islands, we will also increase the utilization of our aircraft.”
The seasonal offer complements airBaltic's current services to the Canary Islands, since the airline, which landed on the Island last year, has increased the operation of direct flights from its four main bases: Riga, Tallinn (Estonia), Vilnius and Tampere. In addition to the direct flights between Riga and Gran Canaria, which were launched last year, airBaltic now connects the airport with nine new destinations in northern Europe: Riga, Tallinn, Bergen, Viilnius, Oslo-Sandefjord Torp, Aalborg, Oslo- Gardermoen, Billun, Copenhagen and Tampere, in Finland; Therefore, it will link Gran Canaria with relevant cities in Latvia, Estonia, Norway, Lithuania, Denmark and Finland.
The new routes will be operated by Airbus A220-300 aircraft, one of the most efficient commercial aircraft in the skies. The A220-300 offers an excellent flying experience with passenger benefits such as wider seats, larger windows, more cabin carry-on space and improved lavatories, delivering better overall performance, fuel efficiency and comfort. for both passengers and staff.
airBaltic operates more than 100 routes from Riga, Tallinn, Vilnius and Tampere, offering connections to a wide range of destinations on the airline's route network in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and the Caucasus region.
