It was 2003 when Theodorus Maria Franciscus Joseph, that is, Tom Smulders, a native of Gouda, where the cheese dish that is so well known on the islands, was campaign manager, and candidate, for the PSOE in San Bartolomé de Tirajana under the leadership of Pacuco Guedes. 20 years later he has been in the news for two things: leaving the presidency of the FEHT apartment employers' association and calling those in SER Las Palmas "subnormal" those who defend that one must have a phobia of tourism, that is, tourismophobes. That candidacy is one of the things that people least remember about a Smulders who has not exactly been a socialist when it comes to talking about the demands of the workers in the sector.
But, behind these nuances, as in good wines, there is a large winery owned by a KLM employee who opted to leave airplanes to settle in the south of Gran Canaria and dedicate himself to vacation tourism with MyTravel, which, with the passage of time, , ended up in the hands of TUI. From those heights to controlling Corona Verde apartments in Playa del Inglés with the frugality typical of the Dutch. That is to say: an outright stingy who, in his farewell to the employers, as an anecdote, uses WhatsApp because it is free.
Smulders was born in Gouda on May 4, 1950, to Theo Smulders and Marthe Carlier. They have one daughter and four sons, some of whom live in South Africa. Her sister, Miriam, served as mayor of Rodenrijs. Tom spent the early years of his youth in the town of Voorburg in a well-off family environment. His father owned a Bonera candy factory. He died at the age of 54. A family friend, a shipowner, was appointed guardian in support of his mother. Tom spent eight years at the St. Louis boarding schools in Amersfoort and Oudenbosch and completed his high school education at Thomas More College. His mother was a schoolteacher. Aware of the importance of Christian humanism, he was a member of the Congregation of the Brothers of St. Aloysius Gonzaga. When his father died, a shipowner, he became Smulders' guardian at the age of 8 because he was a family friend.
She tried to study Politics at the University of Amsterdam, trained as a model, but dedicated herself to working in the Vroom & Dreesmann department store. From then on she started working at KLM as a cabin attendant. At 25 years old she knows the world and explores Africa. By speaking four languages, the world opens up opportunities for her and in 1975 she began working as a tour guide in Benidorm as well as head of logistics for a local operator. Immediately afterwards he begins to serve tourists who buy vacations in the Canary Islands. During that period he was arrested for having bad words with a high political official of the regime due to water problems in the south of Gran Canaria. Smulders began to be known for the office where he worked at Viajes Meliá in the 'Las Olas' Building on Avenida Italia in Playa del Inglés until in 1978 he decided to make his permanent residence in his Corona Verde apartments until he created Heineken Café in 1987. in the Gran Chaparral shopping center. In 1998 Marysol changed owners and had to return to Holland. Smulders decides to leave Holland and return to Playa del Inglés where he buys another seven apartments in the Corona Verde. And that's what he's up to now: between his apartments, classical music and traveling.
