The municipality of Mogán became a pioneer by hosting the talk and show '8 islands in 5 strings'

On Sunday, as the sun set, the chords of five timples filled Veneguera. The municipality of Mogán became a pioneer by hosting the talk and show '8 islands in 5 strings', dedicated to the instrument par excellence of the Canary Islands, the timple. First, the renowned Gran Canarian musician and president of the Canarian Timple Association, Germán Lopez, led a talk-workshop with the public and then, together with four timple players representing other islands, delighted with a concert in which there was no shortage of isas, malagueñas and folías, but also other non-folk songs that reflect the versatility of the timple.

Promoted by the company AD Producciones with financing from the Government of the Canary Islands and the collaboration of the Mogán City Council, it began shortly after 18:30 p.m. in the Plaza de Veneguera with the clear objective of promoting the timple and making its history and reality known. current to the audience present, especially to the youngest.

For this purpose, in addition to Germán López, the Timplists José Vicente Pérez (Lanzarote), Julia Rodríguez (Fuerteventura), Gabriel Ángel Campos (La Gomera) and Belsech Rodríguez (Tenerife) also met in this Mogan enclave. They are all part of a fairly young generation of musicians and, although they understand this instrument from their particular perspective as they come from different parts of the archipelago, they agree on its value as a tool intrinsically associated with Canarian culture and on the endless possibilities it offers when related. with musical styles further removed from folklore.

In Venguera it was confirmed that the timple continues to be attractive to the little ones. In this neighborhood a good number of boys, girls and young people learn to play this and other instruments of folk music in the Artistic Schools of Mogán, and yesterday they did not miss the opportunity to participate in the talk to learn about the timple in all its aspects together to the rest of the attendees, among them the accidental Councilor for Culture, Consuelo Díaz. In this way, one of the goals of this event coordinated by Germán López was fulfilled, to awaken interest in timple among youth.

The concert then began in which the five timplistas individually performed the song chosen by each one for the occasion. Thus, Germán López played his popular 'Malagueña embrujada', Gabriel Ángel Campos the so-called 'Gomera Soul' and Julia Rodríguez a heartfelt tribute to the island of La Palma with Taburiente's song 'A la caldera', to which she also gave voice. . But they also played together and all this with the participation of Pablo Díaz with the Pito Herreño, the singer Sergio Cabrera, the guitarist Carlos Martín, the bassist Jaime del Pino and the percussionist Totó Noriega.

The Mogán City Council has opted for '8 islands in 5 strings' because it contributes to promoting an instrument as important for the Canary Islands as the timple and to ensure that interest in it does not decrease over time. Furthermore, it is in accordance with the goal that the Consistory has proposed of disseminating the cultural identity and folklore of the Canary Islands among the minors of the municipality with activities in educational centers throughout the school year.
