The General Directorate of Emergencies has declared a pre-alert situation for this phenomenon that will begin on Saturday in the eastern islands and will move to the rest of the Archipelago.

The Government of the Canary Islands has declared a pre-alert situation for wind throughout the Archipelago starting at 06:00 on Saturday, December 16, taking into account the information provided by the State Meteorological Agency and other available sources, and in application of the Specific Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands for Risks of Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).

 

This wind episode will begin on Saturday in the eastern islands and will move to the rest of the archipelago. This is a general wind with a moderate east and southeast component, with strong areas (50 – 60 km/h) and gusts that will probably reach or exceed 70 – 80 km/h.

 

The most intense gusts will be recorded in La Graciosa, north and west of Lanzarote, west of Fuerteventura, peaks of Gran Canaria, northern slope of Tenerife - between the municipalities of La Orotava and Santa Cruz de Tenerife - municipality of El Paso in La Palma , north and west of La Gomera and summit, Valle del Golfo and north of El Hierro.

 

Furthermore, it must be taken into account that this wind episode will affect the state of the sea on the coasts of the Archipelago in the same way, and that the pre-alert situation due to haze is also maintained on all the Islands.

 

Given this weather forecast related to the wind, it is recommended that the population follow the self-protection advice to avoid risk situations such as, for example, removing pots and all objects that could fall onto the street and cause damage from windows, balconies and roofs. an accident.

 

Outside, it is advisable to stay away from cornices or walls and avoid walking through gardens or wooded areas, as well as passing buildings under construction or in poor condition.

 

Also, caution should be taken with scaffolding, cranes, billboards or other elements, such as Christmas lighting or decorations, that are at risk of falling or being blown away by the wind.

 

Furthermore, given the possible presence of obstacles on the roads, it is advisable to exercise extreme caution while driving and, until normality is restored, avoid going on a hike or camping trip.
