Football leaders in a tournament of enormous international impact for Gran Canaria
The stands of the Maspalomas Sports City were packed with thousands of fans and familiar faces such as Paquito Ortiz , head of innovation at the UD Las Palmas Canary Foundation and former player for the yellow team; journalist José Ramón de la Morena , whose Foundation promotes this tournament along with LALIGA; and Ángel María Villar , former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, who was delighted to be able to witness this tournament "in this wonderful land, seeing some youngsters in a learning period who must not forget that to be top-level players they have to sacrifice a lot and combine their studies with this sport."
Words of praise also came from the pitch, from referee Mateu Lahoz , recently retired from professional football, “imagine what this invitation has meant to me, with my children in
the stands, this tournament is education, it is training, values, sportsmanship…” Lahoz claimed to be delighted with the level of the players, “all the kids here would be very good referees, because they know a lot about football”, and he also highlighted the importance of accepting defeats, “I was able to see as an assistant Liverpool, who conceded up to seven goals, but they never lowered their level, they continued with immense desire, for me that is magical, they are lessons learned, we faced defeat.”
That is why he gives advice to all the players, “we have come to have fun, you are players from some of the best academies, go out and do what you know how to do, without pressure, let the boys have fun and get educated.” He also pointed out that this image transcends many countries, continents “in which they are having a very bad time,” and it is important that this is the case.
Lahoz was full of praise for the organization, especially for the ball boys, "one of its fundamental pillars." The San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, through its Department of Sports, publicly expressed its gratitude for the commitment of CD Maspalomas, San Fernando CD, CD Tablero, and El Castillo CF , who have loaned their under-12 players to serve as ball boys in this 2023 edition.
José Ramón de la Morena , for his part, described the tournament “as a Christmas football nativity scene, which couldn't be anywhere else but the Canary Islands. The Tourism Councillor of the Gran Canaria Island Council, Carlos Álamo, has fought for it like no one else, working closely with the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Town Council, because they don't care about ideologies, only their land, along with Domingo Espino , the best organizer we've ever had.” De la Morena also didn't forget “the enormous media impact this tournament has, which will be even greater this year, since it's being broadcast on more platforms than ever before.”
Specifically, there are about 15 countries around the world that receive images and developments of the XXVII LALIGA FC FUTURES International Tournament , places as far away as China, the United States or Australia , where the enormous sporting level of the competition, the quality sports facilities capable of hosting international events and a privileged environment, the tourist destination of Gran Canaria and Maspalomas, which celebrates an outdoor tournament with spring-like temperatures in the middle of December, are already reaching.
