Unemployment data at the end of 2023 register the lowest number of unemployed since 2007 and shed some light for the new year
Unemployment registered in the SEPE offices in the Canary Islands fell by 15.315 people in 2023, 8,36% less than in 2022, which left a total number of unemployed people at 167.845. Some numbers in which the decrease experienced in December of 1,58% compared to the previous month stands out, leaving a total of 2.689 fewer unemployed.
With the drop in 2023, there are already three consecutive years of decreases in unemployment in the archipelago, data that sheds light for 2024 and marks the lowest figure at the end of a year since 2007. Since the beginning of the series In comparable history, in 1996, unemployment fell 14 times in the Canary Islands while it rose 13 times, with this last year's decline being the smallest drop since 2018.
At a statistical level, the year closed with 95.754 unemployed women, 9.038 less than in 2022 and 72.091 men, marking a decrease of 6.277 in the same period. It also fell among young people under 25 years of age with 1212 fewer unemployed, while unemployment among people 25 years of age or older fell by 14.103 unemployed.
By sectors, this month of December unemployment fell in Services, with a decrease of 1,55% and 2023 fewer unemployed (-1,55%), although despite this it is still the sector with the most unemployed in the archipelago with 128.722 unemployed while that Agriculture marked a decrease of 3,84% and 135 fewer unemployed people (-3,84%) and was positioned as one of the sectors with the fewest unemployed people in the Canary Islands with 3.383.
