The Gran Canaria airport takes air after the handling strike

The Gran Canaria airport recovers some normality after the images of more than a thousand suitcases accumulated in various rooms of the aerodrome opened most of the news last weekend

The Gran Canaria airport was one of the most affected by the Iberia handling strike. Consequences that ranged from delays to flights that left without the passengers' suitcases on board.

Some events that have further strained negotiations between airlines and unions, since the latter assure that the company has prioritized the punctuality of flights over the well-being of passengers, leaving a multitude of bags accumulated at the Gran Canaria Airport.

A disastrous image for the image of the airfield and for the island itself as a destination, with suitcases accumulated in different rooms of the island airport, even at the check-in counters themselves. Something that, logically, has provoked the indignation of the passengers affected by this situation, some of whom have even found themselves stranded in airports other than their destination. As is the case of 180 passengers who took off from Gran Canaria three hours late to Bilbao but who, after a stopover in Barcelona, were forced to continue on their way by bus to the Basque Country.

During the first day without a strike, the island's airport has taken on some air and ground operations have been "normalized" and the company has chosen to use its Airbus 350, aircraft with greater capacity in its hold to cover routes that were assigned to smaller capacity aircraft such as the Airbus 320. It is estimated that yesterday, Tuesday, some 600 suitcases were released from the airport, which made it possible to decongest the areas of the premises that were full of piled-up luggage.

Given the tense situation experienced during these four days of strike, after its end last Monday, the company and the unions immediately sat down again to negotiate, but again they ended the meeting without an agreement. This Wednesday both parties will sit down again, although taking into account the firmness of their positions, a new strike by the handling staff seems closer than an agreement that will satisfy both the workers and the airline.
