Irene arrives: water and wind to welcome the weekend

Cristian Sanchez Thursday, January 18, 2024

The AEMET has warned about the probability of rain and gusts of wind in the coming days in much of the archipelago due to Storm Irene.

After the discreet passage of Hipólito, Irene arrives at the archipelago in force; a storm that has put many Spanish provinces on alert and that will be noticeable in the Canary Islands with gusts of wind and rainfall

The forecasts call Thursday a “big day,” the day on which Irene will generate greater instability and leave rainfall in several parts of the islands, especially in the northern part of the western islands.

Rain, waves and strong gusts of wind have put nine communities on alert since yesterday, including the Canary Islands. It is expected that the storm could cause gusts of wind in the archipelago that reach 100 km/h in some places. In Gran Canaria, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma, there is a yellow warning for wind or rain.

Unlike the Hipólito storm that practically passed by the archipelago, Irene will make its effects noticeable with meteorological phenomena and a climate more typical of the winter season. Despite this, it is not expected to stay on the islands for long, since the forecasts indicate that the position of the anticyclone will recover over the weekend and that, therefore, stability will return to the archipelago.
