The south of Gran Canaria is a hot destination for hotel investment and that is largely because the financial industry has taken control of the destination and they have
professionalized the management and left behind the primitive forms of promotion that had barely evolved since the Seventies in Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas.
Blackstone is the largest hotelier in the south of Gran Canaria with chains such as the former IFA Hotels, Dunas, Margarita de Playa del Inglés. There are other funds but with a lower investment burden, such as Bankinter's Atom Socimi in the old Tamarindos hotel. The presence of the funds has helped the banks to focus on the south of Gran Canaria, giving credibility to the destination traditionally anchored to local savings banks that have disappeared.
The south of Gran Canaria is one of the most important tourist areas in Spain. In 2023, the hotel business reached 1.175 million euros, making it the main hotel investment destination in Spain. The majority of hotel investment projects in the south of Gran Canaria are concentrated in the Meloneras area, one of the most exclusive tourist areas of the island where entities such as Banco Santander have a good part of their exposure in the Canary Islands. In this area, three new luxury resorts are being built or planned, with a total investment that exceeds 1.000 million euros.
These new resorts will have a total of 4.000 rooms and will generate more than 4.000 direct jobs. Its opening is expected to help boost the island's economy and create new employment opportunities. In addition to the investment projects in Meloneras, other hotel investment projects are also being developed in the south of Gran Canaria. A new tourist complex is being planned with a four-star hotel, a shopping center and a golf course.
